Biography - Mrs Carla Brown
Mrs Carla Brown has been employed by the Department of Health at Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital (RCWMCH) for just over 29 years. After completing her final University student placements at RCWMCH in 1994, she graduated from the University of Cape Town with a degree in Social Work. She was then employed at RCWMCH, and from 1995 to 2000 she was the social worker in for the Respiratory ICU, Neonatal ICU and Surgical ICU and Spinal Defects Clinic. When the four Intensive Care Units amalgamated into one, she spent the next 15 years managing the psychosocial services for the amalgamated Paediatric Intensive Care Unit. Mrs Brown was part of the Spinal Defects Clinic services for the first 20 years of her career being an active member of ASBAH Western Cape. Her success and leadership in the PICU contributed to her being appointed as Head of the Social Work Services at RCWMCH in 2015. She is regularly invited to participates in research and the training programmes of the Social Development, Medical and Paediatric Nursing programmes, the Children’s Institute, and that of the Department of Social Development. She has extensive experience in Child Protection work from a Health Facility perspective and forms part of evaluating and developing new systems and best practice in the hospital's child protection service. Presently she serves on the Board of Child Line Western Cape and is a member of the RCWMCH School Governing Body and UCT Advocacy Committee. In 2023 she graduated from UCT School of Public Health with a PG Dip in Health Leadership (Oliver Tambo Fellowship Programme).
