Welcome to the SA-ChilD Website

The Southern African Academy of Childhood Disability (SA-ChilD for short) - registered with the Department of Social Development 254-516 NPO - is a member of the International Alliance of Academies of Childhood Disability (IAACD). This is a global alliance of academies of professionals working with children, youth and adults with childhood onset developmental disabilities and their families.  We all share a similar goal – to improve the health and well-being of all children, youth and adults with childhood-onset disabilities through collaboration across disciplines and across countries.

The IAACD provides a platform for international and interdisciplinary collaboration; opportunities to advance best practice through teaching and by disseminating current research; and advocating for services of children with developmental disabilities and their families.  We share the vision of the IAACD – “that our success will be determined by the extent to which families can access networks that will support their child’s path of development, no matter the nature of their disability or where they live.”

If you are interested in making this a reality for all children, youth and adults with lifelong childhood onset disabilities living in Southern Africa, then please do join us by becoming a member.  SA-ChilD provides a meeting place for health professionals, academics, researchers, educators, clinicians and family members who share a passion for making a positive difference in their health and well-being.

COVID-19 Task Force
Publication April 2023
This paper synthesizes existing evidence describing the impact of COVID-19 on people with disabilities, derived from surveys conducted across the globe. This project was conducted as part of the IAACD COVID-19 Task Force. Information from more than 17,230 participants around the world was collected. Globally, the surveys highlight that COVID-19 has negatively impacted several areas of functioning - including mental health, and human rights of people with disabilities and their families.
