Biography - Dr Heather Thomson
I am a Developmental Paediatrician, I am presently running the Developmental Unit, Department of Paediatrics Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, together with my co- consultant Dr Jacqui Bezuidenhout. The role of the unit is 1) to provide a comprehensive service for child with a variety of special needs including: autism, developmental and intellectual delay, syndromes, hearing impairment, learning disabilities, ADHD, cerebral palsy and a specialized multidisciplinary clinic for children with visual impairment. We also work closely with the orthopaedic team, Prof Robertson and Dr Simmons to assess and manage children with cerebral palsy. 2) to train both undergraduates and postgraduate students in the area of Neurodevelopment. Thus far 4 Developmental Paediatricians have qualified after completing their fellowship in this unit, a fifth one is writing her exams, and sixth one training at present. Dr Bezuidenhout and myself run the MSc Child Health (Neurodevelopment). I play role in liaising with Dept Education, and outreach to secondary level hospitals. |
